How to Choose Genuine Egyptian Cotton Bedding: The Complete Guide

Egyptian cotton percale bedding set with lavender embroidery | Hareer x Hareer

Egyptian cotton is one of the most searched words in luxury bedding, and one of the most misused. This guide explains what to look for before you buy, so you pay for real quality and not just a label.

What makes Egyptian cotton different?

Egyptian cotton is grown in the Nile Delta, where the soil and warm climate produce extra-long-staple fibres. Longer fibres can be spun into finer, stronger yarns with fewer loose ends. The result is bedding that feels smoother, breathes better and becomes softer with every wash instead of wearing out quickly.

The finest varieties carry the name Giza, followed by a number. Giza 45, for example, is one of the rarest and finest cotton fibres in the world and is used by the most respected linen houses.

Thread count: higher is not always better

Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. A well-made 300 to 600 thread count in pure Egyptian cotton often feels better than a very high number achieved with thin, multi-ply yarns. Look at the fibre and the weave first, then the number.

  • 200 to 400 TC: crisp, light and very breathable, ideal for warm climates.
  • 400 to 600 TC: the balance most people love, smooth with a gentle weight.
  • 800 to 1000 TC: dense and luxurious, with a richer hand.

Percale or sateen?

Percale is woven one thread over, one under. It has a cool, crisp, matte finish, like a freshly pressed shirt, and it is the best choice for hot summers in the Gulf and Egypt. Sateen floats more threads on the surface, giving a silky sheen and a warmer feel. All Hareer x Hareer bedding sets are made in Egyptian cotton percale.

How to spot genuine Egyptian cotton

  • The label should say 100% Egyptian cotton. Phrases such as “Egyptian quality” or “Egyptian cotton blend” usually mean something else.
  • Ask about the cotton variety, the weave and the thread count. A serious maker can answer all three.
  • A price that seems too good to be true usually is: extra-long-staple cotton costs more to grow and spin.
  • Genuine Egyptian cotton feels smooth and cool from the first night and softens further after washing.

Choosing the right size

Measure your mattress width, length and depth before ordering, especially for deep mattresses and toppers. Our sets come in King and Super King, and each six-piece set includes an embroidered duvet cover, a plain fitted sheet, two embroidered pillowcases and two plain pillowcases.

Buying for a new home or a bride

Leading linen makers recommend three sets for every bed: one on the bed, one in the wash and one in the cupboard. For a bridal trousseau, choose one classic white set with a refined border, one set with colour, and one embroidered design that reflects your taste.

Care tips that keep cotton soft

  • Wash at a maximum of 40°C on a gentle cycle, with similar colours.
  • Avoid bleach and fabric softener, which weaken and coat the fibres.
  • Tumble dry on low and remove while slightly damp.
  • Iron embroidery on the reverse side.
